What are you going to work towards in 2018? You have a whole year ahead of you, what are you going to do with it? This year we will focus on pursuing love. Imagine if we pursued love in every aspect of our lives...would your life be any different at the end of 2018 than at the beginning? You bet.
Let's pursue love in 2018!
Let's pursue love in 2018!
2018 Sermons:
Love's Fruit (pt 3)
Love is more than just a feeling...it is action, attitude, and agape love. Bearing the fruit of the Spirit should not just be an idea, but a lifestyle. This week we look at faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Three of the toughest attributes are mentioned last by Paul, yet so important in living for God each day. This sermon looks at these attributes and encourages us to bear fruit in our lives.

Love's Fruit (pt 2)
This week we examine the fruit of the Spirit and ask, "Am I bearing fruit that God wants?" We look specifically at long-suffering (patience), kindness, and goodness. Let's make sure we are trying to be led by the Spirit and bearing fruit in our lives!

Love's Direction
How do we know which path to follow in life? We are told to "walk in the spirit" to be "led by the spirit" and again to "walk in the spirit" in Galatians 5:16, 18, 25. How do we accomplish this? How can Christians develop the right direction in their lives to walk in the spirit? Listen here to learn more about walking in the spirit.

Love's Endurance
What if at the first failure, you gave up: At the first hint of trouble in marriage, you bailed? At the first exam, you quit? At the first tough day on the job, you resigned? If you love someone or something, you will endure at it...that's why parents change diapers! God challenges His people to be people of endurance. We see endurance in the early church through Paul's preaching and in how the church reacted to Paul's preaching...by enduring! Listen here to learn more!

Love Overlooks Faults
Imagine if every mistake, every imperfection were criticized, that would not be a fun way to live or a healthy relationship would it? The fact is, love is willing to overlook faults. As God's people, we need to be willing to overlook the faults of others. This does not mean we ignore sin, but does mean that quirks, mistakes and failures are given another chance.

Love's Sacrifice
Jesus' coming to the earth was prophesied, had purpose, and was not a surprise as He came to perish. When we look at the depth of love Christ has for the world it is no mistake that He died to save the world. He gave the ultimate sacrifice out of love. We must recognize His sacrifice for us. The real question is...how do we respond to that sacrifice?

Love's Hope
Often times people think of hope as something that "may or may not" happen...like a shot in the dark or a "luck of the draw." Biblical faith is far from something relegated to chance. This sermon looks to discover how the Bible defines biblical hope as a desire plus an expectation of fulfillment. Listen here to learn more about the hope Christians can have.

Love's Principles
There are certain principles that must be understood by God's people. For example, His people must understand that love and keeping the Lord's commands go hand-in-hand. Love doesn't excuse God's people to do anything they want to do. In the same manner, keeping the Lord's commands doesn't excuse God's people from love being a motivating force in their lives. This sermon continues the idea of similar or same and seeks to apply God's word in today's day and age.

Love Recognizes
If you love someone, you will recognize those things that are important to them. We must recognize that what is most important to God is His desire for us to be saved and come to a knowledge of the truth. It is important, urgent, and the most pressing need. As we recognize those things which are important to God, we discover Christ and His church. As we move down that path we need to make sure we're not just similar to what God wants...but the same as God wants us to be.

Love Pursues Patience
Patience is one of those things that people are afraid to pray for, because they fear their prayer might be answered and something will happen that will cause them to have to have patience. This sermon looks at the idea that forgiveness and patience are tied together. Because I receive forgiveness...I should be patient with others because that's what I want from God. Love's Service
For many months we have been working through the process of nominating, selecting, and installing elders here at the Foristell church of Christ. We are pleased to announce that this Sunday, we have identified four men who have the desire to serve as elders and exhibit the qualities laid out in Scripture to serve in that capacity. This sermon previews the service elders will need to give, and the service members will need to give...all to the glory of God.

Love's Attitude (pt 2)
Jesus is anointed with oil in preparation for His death upon the cross. Even Jesus' own disciples saw this as a wasteful, pointless act. However, Jesus saw the heart of the action and the value of the gift and it has been an event told for nearly 2,000 years. So...What's your attitude towards giving towards the Lord's work, or seeing others give towards the work?

Love's Attitude (Especially in Service)
What is your attitude while serving God? Your attitude while attending worship, bible class, doing outreach, helping the homeless, or feeding the hungry matters! If we only serve God because we HAVE to...that is not the right attitude to have. This sermon challenges us to go beyond a basic attitude, to see and adopt the right attitude for our lives of service to God. What's your attitude?

Love Your Neighbor
The famous question, "Who is my neighbor?" was asked almost 2,000 years ago...yet we still struggle and ask the same question today in hopes of justifying ourselves. This sermon seeks to encourage us to identify our neighbor, and to seek to love them. Doing this will help us live the way God calls us to live...even if it's not easy.

Balancing Law and Love
Extremes are not good. If one swings to the extreme of keeping God's laws and rules with no heart involved, that is not good. But to swing to the other end of the pendulum and suggest that there are no laws, rules or commands that one is to keep, that is not good either as it misses clear Bible teaching on the topic. The point is that there must be balance that there are commands God expects us to keep (law), but also we must have love in our lives as we keep those commands (Love). This sermon examines the balance that is needed between Law and Love.

Love Accepts Responsibility
Responsibility is something that is easy to pass, and hard to accept. It has been said that, "The buck rolls down-hill." That is, the person farther down the chain of command is usually the one caught "holding the bag."
Paul wrote to the Christians in Galatia and encouraged them to step up and take responsibility. Paul reminds them that they have a responsibility
1) For the Lost. They needed to restore Christians to Christ instead of let them walk away from the faith.
2) For the Load. We need to share one another's burdens. Yet, at the same time, realize that we have an individual responsibility and load we must bear ourselves.
3) For the Harvest. What we reap, we will sow. It is easy to give up, give in, and give out. However, Christians are not those who should give up. We need to hold firm to the Lord and to his word and know that in due time, we will reap our harvest. Let us make sure the harvest we want is what we will actually receive.

What do you see when you look in the mirror? Do you see Christ reflecting in your life? If we truly love God, then we will seek to reflect Christ in our lives. What does that look like, you ask? Love Doesn't Hide
When you truly love someone, you won't hide it. Often times young love is fearful, afraid, ashamed. Boys may be afraid to tell their friends they have a new girlfriend. Young men may be afraid to say the words "I love you" to a lady for the first time. It is nerve-racking, I get it! Yet...love overcomes those obstacles and hurdles and is not afraid to proclaim, "I love you!" In fact, isn't that what a marriage ceremony is partly about, with two people coming together to proclaim their love for each other, to make a commitment to each other, and to do it all...in front of people!
Saul was to be King of Israel, yet is found to be hiding among the baggage when the proclamation is made by Samuel. Like Saul, do we hide behind our own baggage, hiding our love for God and the work He has called us to do?

Love Considers the Source
Where do you get your information? Would you take hair advice from a person who looks like they haven't washed their hair in three weeks? Would you want your personal exercise trainer to be out of shape and weigh 500 lbs? Would you want your financial adviser to be Bernie Madoff? The point is, we have to consider the source!
God provides us with direction, correction, and blessings. Will we recognize the source of our hope and blessings and praise Him?

Imagine a tree without roots. The smallest storm or gust of wind could easily knock over such a tree. In the same manner, imagine a person claiming love in God and faith in Christ and yet their faith had no roots. Any small challenge or trial will knock their faith to the ground. So often we see this happening, so how can our love have roots? Listen here to find out.

Love is Personal
"For God so loved the world..." we know that part well. We know God loves people. But, do I know that God loves ME? Do we take the love God has and make it personal? This sermon looks at Psalm 116, a Psalm that is extremely personal, and we investigate HOW love is personal. This Psalm has 19 verses and out of those 19...only 2 do not have the words "I" or "me" in them. The point: for this writer of the Psalm love is personal. Is our love for God personal?

Love Lifted Me
Paul writes about how so many Christians faced challenges, suffering, and even persecution in their lives. What motivates Christians to be strong in their faith? How can we make sure we are pleasing God?
This sermon looks at the motivation behind faithful lives dedicated to God: Love! Paul said he was compelled, or motivated by love. It wasn't that Paul was forced to serve God, it is that he wanted to serve God. Do we want the same?

Love Involves Sacrifice
The first time the word "love" is used in the Bible is in Genesis 22:2. Isn't it amazing that when God wants to show us what love really means...He does so through the event of Abraham sacrificing Isaac. Abraham had a choice to make: Love his son, or Love God. Abraham chose to love God. He didn't know how God would provide, or when, but Abraham knew God would provide. That faith made all the difference!

Pursue Love
This sermon kicks off the year's theme for 2018. We must pursue love in every aspect of our lives! Did you know that sometimes the Bible redefines what a word means? For example, before the New Testament, the word love (AGAPE) was used to mean more of a friendship kind of love. Aristotle even described love as serving your own needs and searching for your own happiness. God redefined love (AGAPE) when Christ came into the world. Love is less about being self-serving, and more about being self-less. Listen here to understand more about the importance of love.
