2017 Sermon Theme: Better
Who wants to grow in their faith? Who doesn't face challenges to that growth?
Answer: We all do!
We will spend this entire year examining ways we can get "better" in our faith and service to God. By the end of 2017, we hope you can look back and say of your faith in God, service to Him, and love towards others that, "I'm better than last year."
The book of Hebrews provides our guide to being "better" in every aspect of our faith and lives for God. Listen below, and please...Grow!

Better Conduct
How we live matters. If what we KNOW doesn't affect how we LIVE, then what's the point? The fact is the Christians in Hebrews were called to live differently. In spite of the challenges they faced, they were called to love one another, to consider they way they conducted themselves, and to submit to the leaders of the church and, ultimately, to Christ. Am I willing to do the same?

Better Grasp of Faith
How well do you grasp the concept of faith? Most of us...not very well. We range from thinking it is a blanket belief in something..."blind faith"...to viewing faith as more of a superstition. Hebrews 11 shows us a snapshot of what faith looks like. In every case...faith acts! This sermon examines people who lived in faith and were pleasing to God. People who the world deemed as worthless, but whom God deemed as worthwhile.

Better Faith
Who doesn't want to have better faith? We all do...thus our theme for the year. But, faith is one of those things that's hard to define. It is better seen in action than explained on paper or verbally. Hebrews chapter 11 is an explanation of what faith looks like in action. This sermon looks at the faith of Abel, showing us what we can learn from his stand for truth, true worship, and his faith.

Better Recipe
If you were going to prepare and cook one of your favorite recipe's, how would you do it? First, you would have to take inventory of what ingredients you had, and what you had to go buy. Next, you would have to prepare the ingredients according to the recipe. Finally, once the food is prepared, presentation means a lot!
In like manner, before we worship we should take inventory of the rich blessings we have from God. Then, we should prepare ourselves for worship. Finally, we should present ourselves to God, as His people who give their all in worship, considering others and ourselves!

Better Solution
In order to appreciate how wonderful and important the blood of Christ should be to us, we must consider our problem: sin. It is terrible. Hideous. A cruel master. Sin is the problem of our time, but we have a solution to that problem: blood of Christ. Animal blood could not provide for the cleansing of mankind...but the blood of Christ can. What a wonderful solution to our sin-problem. In this sermon we also examine the song, "What can wash away my sin?"

We continue to learn this week about obedience, looking at the example of Noah. Noah was a man of faith in the face of the challenges he came up against daily.

Better Obedience
Is the New Covenant all about grace, or is there an aspect of obedience that Christians must display today. Too often many assume they are saved by grace and that no works of obedience are required. However, James clearly points out we are NOT saved by works alone (2:24). Therefore, this sermon helps us discover...
1) Who to obey
2) How to obey
3) When to obey
4) What to obey
5) Why I should obey

Better Compassion
As our High Priest, Jesus is not just able to help us, but helps us with compassion. The question is...how much compassion do I have towards other people?

Better Pain
Jesus prayed in the garden of Gethsemane for the "cup" to pass from Him. What was this cup? Was He trying to avoid the cross? Was he trying to avoid death, suffering, pain? This lesson seeks to show us how Jesus faced emotional, physical, and spiritual pain...and is the perfect one to help us with our pain.

Better Help
Because of Jesus' sacrifice for us, we have better help from God than at any other point in history before the cross. Though God provides help, we also provide diligence in our faith. As we provide diligence, God provides His word to guide us, Jesus our High Priest to save us, and help along the way.

Better Rest
We are a society of people lacking rest. We work more hours to save for retirement, yet retire later in life. We have superstores open 24 hours a day. We have an internet that is "always on". When do we even have time to rest?
God has always planned for His people to have a rest. The rest planned was not the Sabbath...it was not the Promised Land (Canaan), rather, it is heaven. Will you reach the rest prepared for you?

Better Faith
Having strong faith does not come easily or naturally. It is not something you are born with or given. Strong faith is something developed over time and through conquering many different challenges. So, how do we have a better, stronger faith? This is not a trivial question, but an important one! Hebrews 11:6 reminds us that without faith, it is impossible to please God.

Better Ability
God is powerful. We cannot understand the depth of His power. God, who came to this earth and took the form of a man and became like us, has power to help us. Yet, so often we forget that power. We deny it. Ignore it. Doubt it. This sermon seeks to remind us that God is with us, that Jesus is ABLE to help us. We need to have confidence in our faith and know that we serve a might God who is ABLE to help...If you'll let Him...

Better Taste
When in line at the buffet, looking at the jiggly orange substance that is trying to pass for jello, it may be best to pass by and not waste plate space on questionable items. If you get back to your table and others have tried the orange stuff and proclaim, "It's great, you have to try it!" you just might want to pick some up on your next trip through the line.
How wonderful when someone tastes something for you and lets you know how it is! Better than the buffet line, Jesus has tasted the ups and downs of this life, its successes and failures. In spite of all that we may taste, He proclaims to us that "Life with me is great, you have to try it!"
This sermon examines several things Jesus "tasted" in coming to this earth to live and die for us. May it help us understand our savior better!

Better Vision
Color blindness isn't actually blindness...it is color deficiency. If you are colorblind, you are not seeing the colors clearly. Likewise, we often fail to see Jesus clearly. Not that we are BLIND...but we often are deficient in how we view Jesus.
In this lesson, the Hebrew writer clearly shows how Jesus is better than the angels. Jesus is not a created being, but was involved in creation. Listen here to mentally "see" Jesus in a clearer light, and to see what this means for us today.

A Better Heart
Your heart is where you think, feel, decide. Not your literal blood pumper, but your "heart" is who you are...the "hidden person" of the heart as Peter describes it. What do you have in that hidden inner room? How is it decorated? What do you allow in there? Whom do you allow to have access? This sermon investigates the "hidden person" and asks...what's in your heart?

A Better Messenger with a Better Message
Jesus is the best messenger the Father could send. He brought the best message He could bring. In putting our faith in Jesus Christ, let's start with "WHY" we should follow Jesus. As Simon Sinek described with businesses, we need to "start with why" to discover why we do what we do. Listen here to learn how to live from the inside out.

Better or Bitter?
Your faith WILL be challenged this year. It is not a matter of "if" but "when." As those challenges come, will I grow "better" or "bitter" in my faith?
This sermon gives an overview of the book of Hebrews and looks at symptoms to the problem of growing bitter in your faith.
